WXXI's 2021-2022 Media Literacy Academy

WXXI's 2021-2022 Media Literacy Academy

WXXI Media Literacy Academy

WXXI Education is recruiting interested educators for our 2021-2022 local PBS Media Literacy Academy cohort.

WXXI is looking for interested P-12 educators to be part of our 2021-2022 Media Literacy Academy cohort. This small group of educators will work together with WXXI Education staff to work towards PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification.

The goal of the WXXI Media Literacy Academy is to provide support and training with media literacy skills and media content creation, make connections with other educators, receive support from WXXI Education, and work through 8 microcredentials together. Since many of our local educators are teaching or hosting learning experiences in the virtual space, we will be trying to help educators use as much existing content, lessons, and resources that they have already created to meet the microcredentials.

This opportunity is open to all educators in the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region. An educator is anyone who is working directly with students at the middle/high school level—could be in a traditional school setting, museum, after-school or out-of-school program, library, homeschool, etc.

Here are the details:

  • WXXI's Media Literacy Academy will run from October 2021 through June 2022.

  • The ideal Media Literacy Academy educator:
    • Serves PreK through high school level learners (or educators who support those grade levels)
    • Is already integrating media and using technology in their instruction
    • Has experience creating media content and/or implementing media projects
    • Might be: media rockstar, techie teacher, technology coordinator, library media specialist, digital innovator, technology or media arts coach
    • Is interested in or already using PBS content in their classroom or learning space
    • Has bandwidth or capacity for an ongoing project like this

  •  Participating educators will:
    • Receive NYS CTLE professional development credit
    • Be supported individually and as a group to work through microcredentials towards PBS Media Literacy Educator Certification
    • Receive training on a variety of media literacy related topics
    • Use existing instructional content and materials to achieve microcredentials
