Faster, Higher, Stronger!

The Winter Olympics begin in Sochi, Russia! This week on Classical 91.5, test yourself on famous classical music skating themes at 6:40 a.m.    Also this week, a new series of conversations about music debuts Tuesdays at 4:30pm and Wednesdays at 7:20am.  Rochester’s best musicians will guide you to the artists most worth your time. This week, soprano Andrea Folan reveals the names of her two favorite singers and the surprising qualities they have in common. In the coming months, you'll learn more about the great performers you hear on Classical 91.5 and what makes them special.

Tuesday, February 4    Celebrate Black History Month with a concerto by Florence Price, the first black American woman to have an orchestral piece work performed by a major American orchestra. Enjoy the chocolate-ly voice of Jubilant Sykes, the deft technique of pianist Joyce Yang, the lush sound of the Russian National Orchestra.  You’ll meet a young musician who debuted on NPR’s From the Top playing an unlikely instrument.  On the Writer’s Almanac, poet Katha Pollitt reflects on a funny mind-body problem.
 
Wednesday, February 5   NEW  Sharp Ears Feature  Soprano Andrea Folan reveals the names of her two favorite singers and why she loves listening to them. You’ll hear fine recordings featuring those two singers. On the Writer’s Almanac, we'll consider Six Degrees of Separation. Enjoy music by Debussy, Mozart, and John Cage, as well as an exciting recent performance from Rochester’s First Muse series.
 
Thursday, February 6   Wake to “Winter” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Sibelius’ beautiful Swan of Tuonela, and Vaughan Williams’ soaring Lark Ascending.  Jeff Tyzik, Jon Nakamatsu, and the RPO blaze through the barn-burning finale of Gershwin’s Concerto in F.  WXXI's Julia Figueras interviews RPO guest conductor Michael Morgan and pianist Joyce Yang. 

Friday, February 7   Start the morning with a Beatles Concerto, Philip Glass, and Pachelbel’s Canon.We’ll celebrate Black History Month with a new piece by an African-American composer whose music was the first to be performed by the National Symphony of South Africa following the presidential election of Nelson Mandela.   Lutenist Deborah Fox draws us into her latest recording of 17th century Italian vocal music.
