In the early 1900s, in the west, a number of self-sufficent black towns with vibrant economies existed. One of the best known was Greenwood. It was home to a thriving, independent "Black Wall Street" until the violence of the Tulsa Race Riots changed the community's legacy forever after World War I. This happened in other cities around the country targeted by white mobs.
