Backstage Pass with Members of the Gateways Music Festival

Backstage Pass host Julia Figueras welcomes members of the 2015 Gateways Music Festival to Studio E for a special program, Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5.Artists include: flutist Patricia Reeves, violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins, violists Derek Reeves and Amadi Azikiwe, trumpeter Herb Smith, cellist Kenneth Law, and pianist Terrence Wilson.

Gateways Music Festival aims to increase the visibility and viability of classical musicians of African descent and to heighten public awareness of the contributions to classical music by musicians of African descent.  The festival provides an opportunity for musicians of African descent from all over the country to meet, exchange ideas and revitalize their musical energy.  The festival also aims to establish role models for young musicians of all ethnic origins and to encourage young persons of African descent to study and become actively involved in creating opportunities for musicians of African descent in the field of classical music.      

Participants in the Gateways Music Festival include young professional and student musicians from across the country, as well as established musicians from such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.  The festival was founded in 1993 and has been held in Rochester biannually since 1995.

Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists. An encore of this broadcast airs Sunday, August 16 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5.
