Backstage Pass with Duo Vela

Mon, 07/20/2015 - 1:00pm

Backstage Pass host, Julia Figueras welcomes a flute and guitar duo to Studio E on Monday, July 20 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5. Duo Vela was formed in the fall of 2013 when guitarist Daniel Nistico and flutist Marla Smith met as incoming students at the Eastman School of Music. Duo Vela’s goal is to challenge the traditional audience/performer relationship by presenting unique and engaging musical experiences through creative programming and atmospheric stimuli. Nistico and Smith will perform and talk with Julia about their work, philosophy, and upcoming performances.

More about the artists:

Marla Smith completed her Master of Music Degree while studying with Bonita Boyd at the Eastman School of Music (ESM). Most recently, she has been chosen and awarded full scholarship to attend the month long festival, Summer Nights in Prague, as the principal flutist. While at ESM, Marla was Ms. Boyd’s assistant, the Flute Methods instructor, and also maintained a studio of seven private University of Rochester flute students. Passionate for soloing, Marla has placed first in many competitions, including the Richmond, Virginia Flute Fest (2012 & 2010) and the South Carolina Flute Society’s Young Artist Competition (2011). In the summer of 2012, she attended the Aspen Music Festival and School. Marla has performed for renowned flutists including Aaron Goldman, Mimi Stillman, Ransom Wilson, Brooks de WetterSmith, and Carol Wincenc. She received her Bachelor of Music Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. Former teachers include Dr. Tabatha Easley and Patti R. Watters.

Daniel Nistico has been a prizewinner of the Lions Global Youth Music Competition held in Seattle and the Great Lakes Guitar Society Competition, held in Buffalo. In 2013, Daniel won 2nd prize in The World Competition, an open instrument competition run entirely online. Daniel has performed around the globe including Serbia, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Also in 2013, Daniel recorded his debut album Un Viaje Mistico … A Mystical Journey. Daniel is presently undertaking his Doctor of Musical Arts at Eastman, under both Nicholas Goluses and Paul O’dette and was the first guitarist in the history of the school to be nominated for an Artist Certificate, a prestigious prize awarded to performers of the highest level.

Backstage Pass is a monthly live performance program that gives listeners the backstage experience of meeting local and visiting artists.  An encore of this broadcast airs Sunday, July 26 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5.
