Rochester’s Eastman School of Music (ESM) plays host to the 2013 International Society of Bassists Convention. , June 2 through June 8. Backstage Pass host Julia Figueras welcomes ESM Bass Instructor Jeff Campbell, ESM Professor of Double Bass James VanDemark, and international guests for a celebration of the music for the lowest member of the string family on Tuesday, June 4 at 1 p.m. on Classical 91.5/FM-HD 91.5-2.

Recently selected as the winner of Guitar Center's National Singer Songwriter 2 Competition, Philadelphia native, Campbell moved to San Francisco in 2004 specifically for the newer Rock scene he had heard was developing. After a few years of trying to balance learning the West Coast Music Scene with his day job, the job was cast aside in favor of full time touring, writing and recording for a living. Campbell’s onstage experiences have found him sharing the stage with John Mayer, members of Counting Crows, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead and opening for Grammy-winning band Train.

James VanDemark, one of the most brilliant virtuosi ever to perform on the double bass, was hailed by the New York Times at his Lincoln Center recital debut as “an exceptionally gifted string player and a musician of taste, intelligence and the best spontaneous musical instincts, with an unerring sense for exact intonation.” The San Francisco Chronicle praised his “wonderful facility for making really musical phrases, relaxing, building, shading with unlimited subtleties – and a capacity to dig into whole pages of rip-roaring coloratura and make every note count.” VanDemark began his musical studies at the age of 14 in his hometown of Owatonna, Minnesota, making such rapid progress that just 18 months later he made his solo debut with the Minnesota Orchestra.
