WXXI Internship Opportunities

Since 1958, WXXI has provided the Greater Rochester area with the finest radio and television programming available.  Operating four television channels, six radio stations and many online offerings, WXXI put the community first with programs that stimulate and expand thought, inspire the spirit, open cultural horizons and promote understanding of diverse community issues. By being Rochester’s source for PBS and NPR programming, WXXI is one of the most accessible and trusted voices in the community.



The intern will become familiar with day-to-day activities in the Accounting Department.  You will be trained in month-end closing, account analysis and reconciliations, and the accounts receivable and accounts payable cycles.  Will learn the processes for reconciliation of checking and investment accounts to general ledger.  Working under the supervision of the CFO, the intern should be majoring in accounting and possess good analytical skills.


Supervised by the Station Publicist and Creative Services staff, will observe and learn writing of press releases, posting online highlights on the website, assembling mailing lists, researching special projects, and be involved in outreach and promotional efforts for all of WXXI’s services.

Word processing & strong writing skills required; English or Communications majors preferred.


Under supervision of the host of Connections with Evan Dawson the intern will learn preparation for daily radio program. You will learn about development of possible program topics, lining up potential guests for programs, processes of guest bookings, checking the Web and wires for information and background data relating to upcoming programs and topics. Will receive training from Operations Producer on various technical and production-related duties.

Minimum requirements: Good verbal skills, strong computer research skills & math aptitude.


Intern will learn preventive and routine maintenance of equipment, installation and assembly of audio gear. You will be trained in preparation for live broadcasts, including the setup of microphones, mixers and recorders, as each particular remote dictates. Studio production will involve the same training as above with added emphasis on production and editing, along with dubbing, documentation and the distribution of nationally produced shows. Interns will experience client services and may be exposed to other departments with audio-related tasks.  Will learn the operation of the ENCO storage and automation system.  Hours can be flexible as needed. A great work ethic and communication skills are a must. 

Qualified students should have a basic knowledge of audio production.


Under the supervision of the FM Classical Program Director, with additional direction from the Classical Music Director, Senior Audio Technician, New Director and Director of Creative Services (as appropriate), this intern will learn about the general operations, programming and production, marketing and outreach of a 21st century classical public radio station, and be trained in the skills needed to create and present content on air, online and on mobile.  Training and experience may include: compiling & posting arts calendar announcements; researching, recording and editing artist interviews and performances; use of social and online media related to programming; creating, updating and maintaining music and content databases; on air programming and presentation skills; and basic audio editing and production of arts features.  Intern may also be asked to participate in pledge drives, remote broadcasts and other station events that occur during the period of the internship.

Potential interns are encouraged to consider, create and present at the interview, a personal project proposal that he/she would like to accomplish during the course of the internship. 

Minimum requirements: Thorough knowledge of Classical Music, strong writing and verbal skills, solid online, social media and computer skill.


Under the supervision of the Little Theatre Café Music Coordinator, this intern will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of a working music venue and its management; become familiar with the local music scene and contacts (in a variety of musical genres); understand the role that music plays in the management of a venue; understand and experience booking acts; create and implement marketing tools; build relationships with media contacts; and understand audience development in a non-profit/mission-driven music business. This intern will also receive experience in the use of social media for outreach and report on outcomes of social media marketing. The internship may also include studying and reporting on the motivations and habits of patrons and potential patrons of The Little Theatre Café, as well as the satisfaction and success of the artists/musical groups. Internships that occur during the summer could also include experience with the Hochstein at High Falls lunchtime music series.


Intern will work in the radio/TV newsroom for WXXI, learning how stories are developed, written and produced. Will receive training in software used to edit audio as well as writing broadcast style news copy. May be called on to occasionally go on stories with reporters and learn to gather sound and conduct interviews. Also will have the opportunity to develop material for the web and learn about production of our weekly TV public affairs program.

Minimum requirements: Must be a current college student, preferably in a journalism or related field of study; possess good communications skills; knowledge of how to write broadcast-style copy and/or familiarity with audio editing programs a plus.


Supervised by the Festival Director and Artistic Director, the One Take Documentary Film Festival Media Intern will observe and learn the management of calls for shorts submissions, posting online website information and events, assembling marketing materials, researching niche marketing for specific film titles in the festival, and be involved in outreach efforts for program guide distribution and all festival marketing and public relations.

Word processing, strong writing skills, and web-based research skills required; Marketing, Film Studies or Communications majors preferred.


Will become familiar with WXXI’s educational services, outreach efforts, and community programs. Under guidance of Education Department staff, primarily the Manager of Educational Training & Family Engagement, the Education Intern will: Participate in WXXI’s Summer Learning events and other educational outreach efforts;  learn about engaging families and children in informal learning spaces, how to design learning activities for family-friendly events, and what resources are available from PBS KIDS to support in-person activities; collaborate with WXXI’s community partners; learn how educational technology and media supports learning in/out of the classroom; and learn about the educational media services WXXI provides to the Greater Rochester area. Must have experience working with young children (ages 2-8) in either a camp, school, daycare, or other related environment. Must be available Thursdays in July and August. Enrollment in a teacher preparation program preferred.
