REPORTS TO:                    Rochester Area Media Partners, LLC (R.A.M.P.) Board


SUMMARY: City News seeks an editor to lead a flourishing and mission-driven collaborative news organization. City News is the leading alternative print and digital media organization in Rochester, NY. City News is owned by Rochester Area Media Partners, which is a subsidiary of WXXI Public Broadcasting Council, an NPR and PBS affiliate. As the public media news provider in the Rochester region, WXXI and WXXI News are committed to local, high-quality media services that strengthen the communities they serve.

The editor of City News will lead a team of journalistically outstanding print and digital reporters and editors. You will be responsible for the content management and growth of CITY News, including the weekly newspaper, its digital products, publications, portfolio and special events. You are an experienced journalist, capable of leading with integrity and humility. You are collaborative and energetic, with a deep commitment to local issues.

Did we say collaborative? The editor will participate in news coverage and projects with colleagues from WXXI and WXXI News. We prefer an applicant with a strong sense of multiplatform journalism and with an interest in the needs of multiple audiences. The editor will work closely with WXXI’s news director and projects editor to efficiently achieve these goals in a collaborative environment, sharing resources where appropriate.

As editor, you will advance journalism that serves diverse audiences and will embrace our audiences’ needs and values. You will advance local, contextual, innovative reporting and storytelling. You will ensure that CITY maintains an intense focus on local news, culture and the arts; an emphasis on long-form and narrative journalism; and a commitment to individual freedoms and social differences. You will ensure reporting on and analysis of issues and communities that many mainstream media outlets ignore.

EDITORIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Overseeing all editorial operations of CITY Newspaper, website, digital services and apps. Supervising CITY’s editorial staff.
  • Reporting and writing articles and creating web and social media posts.
  • Working with WXXI’s news director and journalists to share content and develop joint projects.
  • Creating and implementing successful new editorial initiatives.
  • Researching and analyzing comparative data to facilitate optimal editorial content and CITY impact.
  • Analyzing existing workflows and monitoring content pipelines.
  • Keeping abreast of trends in local and independent journalism.

COLLABORATIVE FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinating with multiple internal teams from production to marketing and sales to grow audience, revenue and brand.
  • Developing strong community relationships. Leading partnerships where appropriate.
  • Representing CITY in national and local journalism organizations, meetings and events.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Communicating with the governing board members on a range of topics, including audience, assessment of critical content, digital strategy and performance.
  • Appearing on air as needed (radio and television).
  • Additional duties as assigned.

   

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in journalism/communications, and have at least five years’ experience as an editor/news manager, with previous reporting experience.
  • Excellent project management and organization skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Editorial experience in both print and digital environments.
  • Outstanding presentation skills.
  • Critical thinking, speed of response and flexibility.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding of the evolving digital environment for news.
