Where's Wolfgang?
The top 35 favorites and only one selection from Mozart?? Sorry, but that makes the list pretty worthless, in my opinion!
Surprise to us, too!
I, too, was very surprised at the lack of Mozart in the top 35. Please remember that this list came from our listeners' submissions, and not from us. The value of this list comes from you, the listener. While multiple Mozart works were nominated, there were none--beyond the Grand Partita--that amassed enough votes to crack the top 35. Biggest surprise of all: not one of those last 3 Mozart symphonies got a nod. At all. I guess it just wasn't Wolfgang's year.
When I was growing up
When I was growing up Dvorak's New World was No. 5. Later, it was renumbered as No. 9. Now on your 35 list it shows up as No. 2.
Another relisting or typo???????
Re: Growing Up
Simply my typo. Thanks for spotting it!
History of top tunes survey
I have records of past WXXI-FM surveys and can therefore make bold predictions! Schumann will not appear (poor fellow has never even made the top 100); Eine Kleine Nachtmusik will be around #15. Almost everything will be orchestral in the top 35; Claire de Lune and Moonlight are possible entries. Happy New Year everyone!
Your predictions
I actually pulled out your compiled lists a few weeks ago (you sent them to me the last time we did this), then compared and contrasted the last lists. I think you will, as I was, be a bit surprised by the results this time around. While some standards will be there, there are new works and old favorites in entirely different places. Hope you can keep checking back--and tuning in!
Top 35
At age 19 I decided that every real music lover should have a favorite symphony. I chose Beethoven's 7th. I have reconsidered over the years, and there have been many, and always come back to my favorite!!!!!
I really was thrilled to listen last night.
The thrill is mutual!
We were all surprised--and pleased--to see a new #1 on our listener lists. And Beethoven's 7th is an extraordinary piece. Bear in mind that James Gaffigan and the RPO will be playing it on April 8th and 10th. Hope to see you there!
Beethoven's 7th
Of course I will be at the RPO concert!!!!!
Your predictions
I look forward to doing this! There were rather big jumps between 1991 and 2000, too. (I think to a certain small extent the votes are influenced by what the listeners may have heard most recently.) I have a further suggestion: next time around, ask in categories: orchestral, choral, chamber, etc. There are too many darn good things out there.
