Mark Twain, the voice of Mississippi riverboats and Western mining camps, traveled the world, but he built his home at Nook Farm in Hartford, CT. Enter his home and his Victorian world in Mark Twain's Neighborhood: Nook Farm, airing on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) at

This new one-hour PBS documentary, being released in conjunction with Ken Burns' two-part Mark Twain, which airs at 8 p.m. January 14 and 15 on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), examines Twain's illustrious Victorian-American neighborhood and how the activists who lived there articulated the culture of the nation and addressed the issues of the day, including women's rights, industrialization, and immigration.
There in Hartford, a major publishing center, Twain became the neighbor to abolitionist writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, he raised his family, amused a tumultuous nation with his wit, saved a president's family from destruction, and lost a fortune on an invention. At Nook Farm, Mark Twain wrote the story that would define for the world what it was to be a "Connecticut Yankee."

The documentary weaves together primary-source written materials, archival photographs and period recreations shot on film to tell the fascinating story of this historic community.
