Tax Cuts and You

The Issue

  • Governor Pataki’s S.T.A.R. program is about to take effect. It means homeowners -- especially senior citizens -- are going to pay less property tax. But someone has to pay for the cuts.
    • Is it the state of New York? Is it renters? Is it business? Is it you?
    • Lawmakers are taking credit for it, senior citizens say it’s saving them money.

    • Renee Julian covers the basic of  the S.T.A.R exemption.
  • How do you know if you qualify? Like many towns across the state, the Webster’s assessor’s office has been swamped with requests for applications

  • With tax payments going down, will school districts be tempted to spend? The governor’s plan includes the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, which sets limits for school districts. Will those limits stick, and will they effect the quality of
    education?
    • Elissa Marra finds out what this means for school districts.
