Need to Know Looks at Local Muslim Women

On Sunday, April 15 PBS will launch a major public television event that explores the challenges confronting the post-9/11 world. America at a Crossroads, airing nightly from April 15 through April 20 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), looks at the war on terrorism; the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; the experience of American troops serving abroad; the struggle for balance within the Muslim world; and global perspectives on America’s role overseas. Aimed at creating a national dialogue surrounding the crucial issues explored in the series, an extensive media and outreach campaign in more than 25 communities accompanies the series.

WXXI-TV is proud to be part of this outreach initiative by producing a Need to Know special that feature Muslim women in our region. In Muslim Women in our Midst:  The Path to Understanding, airing Friday, April 13 at 9 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), Need to Know host Julie Philipp explores Rochester's historic connection to the international women's rights movement, and how that movement is alive and well here as America considers what it means to be a Muslim woman at home and abroad. The program features playwright and director Madeline A. Hansen, who spoke at Susan B. Anthony House’s Susan Beyond America: Miss Anthony and the International Council of Women on April 12; Hobart College professor Etin Anwar, who was a panelist at Nazareth College’s symposium on “Islam and the Challenge of Modernity” on March 24 (Hobart Press Release, Nazareth Info); and Nine Parts of Desire, playing at Geva Theatre Center through April 8.

Muslim Women in our Midst:  The Path to Understanding airs Friday, April 13 at 9 p.m.,  Sunday, April 15 at 12:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11), and on AM 1370 on Saturday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m.
