Friday, April 2 at 12 p.m. – The Seven Last Words of Christ

(Rochester, NY) Franz Josef Haydn’s, The Seven Last Words of Christ was first presented on Good Friday in 1787 in Cadiz, Spain. Regardless of their musical knowledge or religious background, Haydn wanted the piece to be accessible to all listeners.

The annual presentation of The Seven Last Words of Christ airing Friday, April 2 at 12 p.m. on Classical 91.5/FM-HD91.5-1, takes place in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. It brings together spiritual leaders from a diverse set of backgrounds and beliefs.

The seven words will be read by: Dr. Jean Bethke Elshtain, Dr. Martin Marty, Dr. Seth Perry, Rev. Dr. Alice Hunt, Rev. Gregory Dell, Rev. Elizabeth Davenport and Alton Logan. Gregory Dell, Rev. Elizabeth Davenport, and Alton Logan, who spent more than 26 years in prison for a murder he did not commit – and the conviction was overturned last year. He reads, “Father, onto your hands I commend my spirit.” The string quartet for this performance includes violinists Rachel Barton Pine and Mathias Tacke, violist Richard Young, and cellist Wendy Warner.
